COVID-19 in Texas - May 31 Update

Post by dan_s »

Texas has a populations of ~30 million when you count the undocumented people living here.

Here were the stats on May 13 (Note that the number tested as almost doubled in 18 days)
587,431 people in Texas had been tested for COVID-19 as of May 13
>42,403 have tested positive. That's 7.213% of those tested, but only 0.14134% of the total population.
> 1,153 people have died**. That's 1.963% of those tested, but only 0.0038% of the total population.
>>> **At the same website it shows that only 485 of those who have died have been confirmed to actually have died from COVID-19. I'm not sure what that means, but 284 of the 485 confirmed are over 70 years old (58.5%)
> 23,519 people are listed as totally recovered. This means they have been retested twice (48 hours apart) and show no signs of the virus.
> So, 42,403 - 1,153 - 23,519 = 17,713 "Active Cases" within Texas

As of May 31
1,054,793 people in Texas have been tested for COVID-19
>62,338 have tested positive. That's 3.066% of those tested, but only 0.2078% of the total population.
> 1,648 people have died**. That's 0.15624% of those tested, but only 0.00549% of the total population.
>>> **At the same website it shows that only 494 of those who have died have been confirmed to actually have died from COVID-19. I'm not sure what that means, but 291 of the 494 confirmed are over 70 years old (58.9%)
> 41,651 people are listed as totally recovered. This means they have been retested twice (48 hours apart) and show no signs of the virus.
> So, 62,338 - 1,648 - 41,651 = 19,039 "Active Cases" within Texas

Only 1,684 of the Active Cases are show as "hospitalized".
So, people with no symptoms or very mild cases are sent home. < The wisdom of this is seems a bit weird to me if this is such a deadly disease. Surely Texas is smart enough not be sending elderly infected people back to nursing homes.

KEEP IN MIND that in every country on Earth 0.7% to 1.2% of the population dies each year. It is estimated that 59,000,000 people will die this year on Earth. As of this morning, 370,416 people have died from COVID-19. Many people think that the number of COVID-19 deaths is "padded" but lets assume in is accurate. The number also includes COVID-19 deaths from 2019. Since the number of deaths is now on decline, I think it is safe to assume that COVID-19 won't account for 1% of global human deaths this year. It won't make the Top 20 causes of death in Texas. I also think that the number of previously healthy people that actually died just from COVID-19 is much less than 0.5% of total deaths this year.

Hospital Data for Texas on May 31: https://txdshs.maps.arcgis.com/apps/ops ... 9eaef6101f

Texas hospitals still have a lot of idle space because FEAR is keeping folks who need those services, especially cancer treatment, are AFRAID to set foot in the hospital. FEAR and DESPAIR will end up causing a lot more death than the virus. POVERTY is a KILLER.

More GREAT NEWS from Europe: Top Italian Doctor: Virus Becoming Less Potent

Reuters:
The new coronavirus is losing its potency and has become much less lethal, a senior Italian doctor said on Sunday.

“In reality, the virus clinically no longer exists in Italy,” said Alberto Zangrillo, the head of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan in the northern region of Lombardy, which has borne the brunt of Italy’s coronavirus contagion.

“The swabs that were performed over the last 10 days showed a viral load in quantitative terms that was absolutely infinitesimal compared to the ones carried out a month or two months ago,” he told RAI television.

Italy has the third highest death toll in the world from COVID-19, with 33,415 people dying since the outbreak came to light on Feb. 21. It has the sixth highest global tally of cases at 233,019.

However new infections and fatalities have fallen steadily in May and the country is unwinding some of the most rigid lockdown restrictions introduced anywhere on the continent.

Zangrillo said some experts were too alarmist about the prospect of a second wave of infections and politicians needed to take into account the new reality.

“We’ve got to get back to being a normal country,” he said. “Someone has to take responsibility for terrorizing the country.”

The government urged caution, saying it was far too soon to claim victory.

“Pending scientific evidence to support the thesis that the virus has disappeared ... I would invite those who say they are sure of it not to confuse Italians,” Sandra Zampa, an undersecretary at the health ministry, said in a statement.

“We should instead invite Italians to maintain the maximum caution, maintain physical distancing, avoid large groups, to frequently wash their hands and to wear masks.”

A second doctor from northern Italy told the national ANSA news agency that he was also seeing the coronavirus weaken.

“The strength the virus had two months ago is not the same strength it has today,” said Matteo Bassetti, head of the infectious diseases clinic at the San Martino hospital in the city of Genoa.

“It is clear that today the COVID-19 disease is different.”
