Well..vote for the other guy

Post by Fraser921 »

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government would require Canada’s oil and gas sector to set benchmarks to reduce emissions if he is re-elected.

In a platform published Sunday, the Liberals pledged to force oil and gas companies to set five-year targets to cut their emissions with the aim of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. The program would begin in 2025. Part of the plan includes a C$2 billion ($1.6 billion) fund to create green jobs in oil-producing regions.

Note from my friends at Raymond James Energy Sector Research 8-30-2021

The summer is traditionally a slow period for politics just about everywhere, but Canada is providing quite the exception. Less than two years after the last general election — the shortest parliament in 15 years — Canadians will go to the polls on September 20. Current polling points to a close contest between the governing Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and the opposition Conservative Party, led by Erin O'Toole.

While our non-Canadian readers may not care much about Canada's apprenticeship training or hockey stadium subsidies (OK, we made that last one up), the fact of the matter is that climate and energy policy is front-and-center in this election. There will be read-through for issues such as the carbon tax, LNG exports, and even public transit. In this cross-border report, we provide the joint perspective of our U.S. and Canadian research teams. (Sneak preview: Germany, another G7 economy, will have its election on September 26 – we will have more to say about that in the near future.)
