After Killing Keystone XL And Banning Federal Leasing, Biden White House Claims ‘All Tools On the Table’ To Combat Rising Fuel Prices
Nicole Jacobs // Team Lead, Hughesville PA
October 8, 2021

It’s only been a few short years since the United States demonstrated that it can compete in the global oil market, and in fact, quite literally drilled its way to lower gasoline prices. Yet, with gasoline prices once again on the rise, the Biden administration continues to look beyond U.S. borders to OPEC+ to solve the problem. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm recently assured Americans that “all tools [are] on the table,” but the administration’s actions suggest otherwise. Over the past year, President Biden cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline which would have safely transported Canadian crude oil to Gulf Coast refineries where it would have been turned into gasoline, among other things. He then followed up that action by placing an illegal ban on federal oil and gas leasing – and won’t be holding an onshore sale at all this calendar year.

There is an important and continued role for oil and natural gas parallel to the world implementing policies to increase renewable energy consumption, according to the Energy Information Administration’s 2021 International Energy Outlook. In fact, in its latest IEO, the EIA projects oil and natural gas will represent close to 50 percent of primary global energy consumption in 2050 – despite significant growth in renewables – with liquid fuels remaining the largest source. Notably, in contrast to the International Energy Agency’s Roadmap to Net Zero released earlier this year which claimed exploration of new oil and gas fields is no longer needed and seemingly at odds with proposed domestic policies that have fueled uncertainty around U.S. production, EIA calls for an increase in oil and natural gas exploration and production.

Jeff Eshelman, Chief Operating Officer of the Independent Petroleum Association of America and EID’s Executive Vice President, explains:

“In the EIA’s International Energy Outlook 2021 we see that responsibly produced natural gas and oil will be part of the world’s energy mix for decades to come. America’s natural gas and oil producers are committed to improving the industry’s environmental performance – and there is proof that it is working. Today, the United States leads the world in emission reductions, resulting in the nation’s cleanest air in two decades. These milestones will continue. As global energy consumption grows, the U.S. natural gas and oil industry, governed by commonsense, effective regulations and public-private partnerships, can ensure that America and nations worldwide will have a reliable energy supply to power their homes, businesses, and critical services.”

With Winter Coming and Energy Prices Soaring, Biden Administration Doubles Down On Anti-Energy Domestic Policies
Erin Mundahl // Researcher, Denver CO
October 5, 2021

Thanks to the development of America’s abundant shale resources, energy supply shocks seemed to be a thing of the past. But with winter approaching, the Biden administration’s refusal to allow timely lease sales for production on federal lands is set to contribute to the highest energy prices in years.

Now that summer has come and gone (with no leasing report to speak of!) energy security is back in the headlines. In Europe, countries are beginning to ration natural gas as on-hand supplies of fuel dwindle and renewables fail to provide enough electricity to pick up the slack. But the prospect of looming global energy shortages and high domestic prices is not enough to push the administration to reconsider its anti-production stance. In a recent interview, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland explained that the department’s review of oil and gas leasing would reflect “where we are in this climate catastrophe that we’re in right now.” “We’re not going to stop gas and oil overnight — that’s just an impossibility right now,” Haaland said, but explained that her goal was to restore balance to the use of public lands, saying that she wants “this era to end” and alluding to greater restrictions to come for the federal oil and gas program. That may not sound reassuring to observers fearing supply constraints and high energy prices this winter.

MY TAKE: Consumers = Voters. U.S. consumers are going to notice a big increase in their energy bills and their food bills. They will also notice that the air in the U.S. is cleaner than it was 20 years ago, the seas are not rising and the polar bear population is increasing. They will also notice that the Green New Deal is not working because areas that rely heavily on wind and solar generated electricity will have more power outages. Democrats will loose the House and the Senate in 2022.

The woke greenies are in CYA mode.

I've heard many times not their fault and solution to the energy shortage is to transition faster

Well, they might lose but they might win.

As we’ve heard, all tools are on the table to mitigate this crisis. Don’t you think that means disgorging the profits from polluting SOB’s and giving it back to the taxpayers. I think that’s going to be a damn fine solution to get them past the 2022 mid-terms

What’s the argument against it? The risk of owning oil and gas stocks isn’t demand destruction or excess supply, or even ESG, it’s Marxism. And in a country where Bernie sanders is popular and Sheila Jackson Lee can’t even get airtime, this is the new framework until the shortages show up here. Essentially they can go to the well 1x, but that gets them past the mid-terms and they might increase their advantage.

Dan, I absolutely rely on your analysis and when you even take a mini-vacation I feel abandoned, but I believe your giving the American voter too much credit in an increasingly desperate. They’ve already made plans and they will enjoy your free cash flow and you’ll get nothing and like it.

Anything Team Biden does to "punish" the upstream companies will be passed on to consumers as higher fuel prices. That will push the their approval rating even lower.
Jimmy Carter tried it with the "Windfall Profits Tax".
