Swiss Re drops thermal coal

Swiss Re told Reuters that from 2023 it would no longer cover the transport of thermal coal via reinsurance treaties. The company pulled out of direct insurance of coal cargoes in 2018.

Patrizia Kern-Ferretti, head of marine at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, said: "I hear from brokers they are having difficulty placing coal policies in the insurance market."

Terminals too are rethinking their businesses.

The port of Antwerp in Belgium has turned its back on coal, while Peel Ports is redeveloping the Hunterston coal import terminal in Scotland to focus on offshore wind.
