* Says wells in North Dakota, Montana flowed above-average

* Shares up 4 pct in pre-market trade (Adds details, background)

April 13 (Reuters) - Oil-focused explorer and producer Brigham Exploration Co reported above-average initial production rates from its two new wells in the lucrative Bakken shale formation, sending its shares up about 4 percent.

The company reported an early 24-hour peak production rate of 5,330 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) from its Sorenson 29-32 #2H well in North Dakota. This compares with about 2,884 boe of average early production it achieved from 56 wells in the region.

Austin, Texas-based Brigham also reported an initial production rate of 2,962 boe from its Johnson 30-19 #1H well in Montana, which it says is a record for Bakken wells in the state.

In the past year, the company has reported initial flow back rates of anything between 900 to 5,100 boe per day from its Bakken properties. [ID:nSGE64P0E6] [ID:nSGE6300HL] [ID:nSGE6BE08J]

Among the tight rock formations known as shales, the Bakken -- located in North Dakota and Montana -- has the highest crude oil content, which is proving valuable as natural gas prices remain in a slump and oil prices are on a rising trend, sparking a bout of Bakken deals. Shares of Brigham have almost doubled in value in the past one year, mostly on back of well results. They closed at $32.41 Monday on Nasdaq and were up 4.2 percent at $33.78 in pre-market trade on Tuesday. (Reporting by Arup Roychoudhury; Editing by Jarshad Kakkrakandy)
