Oil & Gas Prices - Sept 9
Posted: Wed Sep 09, 2020 9:16 am
Opening Prices:
> WTI is up 66c to $37.42/Bbl, and Brent is up 42c to $40.20/Bbl.
> Natural gas is up 4.5c to $2.445/MMBtu.
I saw one article that blamed the pullback in oil prices on the dip in the refinery utilization rate in last Wednesday's EIA report. That dip in the utilization rate was caused by Hurricane Laura that shut down six or seven refineries. Two refineries in the Lake Charles area had significant damage and will be down for awhile.
The refinery utilization rate is a leading indicator of demand for refined products, but not when the dip is caused by a major hurricane. Laura was stronger than Hurricane Rita. Luckily it moved quickly through Louisiana or the death and destruction would have been much worse. I personally spent an hour in a storm with 100 mph winds and it was bad. Laura had 140 mph winds and sustained winds of that speed destroy almost everything.
Closing Prices:
> WTI prompt month (OCT 20) was up $1.29 on the day, to settle at $38.05/Bbl.
> Also, NG prompt month (OCT 20) was up $0.006 on the day, to settle at $2.406/MMBtu
