EIA - Natural Gas Storage Report - August 12

Post by dan_s »

Working gas in storage was 2,776 Bcf as of Friday, August 6, 2021, according to EIA estimates. This represents a net increase of 49 Bcf from the previous week. Stocks were 548 Bcf less than last year at this time and 178 Bcf below the five-year average of 2,954 Bcf.
At 2,776 Bcf, total working gas is within the five-year historical range.

Over the last 13 weeks the deficit to the 5-year average has grown by 110 Bcf.

There are 13 weeks remaining in the refill season and there is zero chance of getting back to the 5-year average storage level before the beginning of with next winter heating season. The 5-year average build for the next 13 weeks is 781 Bcf. 781/13 = 60 Bcf per week. We'd need to see several triple digit builds in September to get back to the 5-year average. Some space heating demand does appear in October.
