Flooding in Louisiana and South Texas

An estimated 14 TRILLION GALLONS OF WATER fell on South Louisiana. Some areas got over 30 inches of rain in one day.

Pray for the poor people who have had water in their homes for over a week. Having your home flooded is about as bad as it gets. If you ever have the choice between a flood or a fire, take the fire.

I grew up in St. Louis. Throughout my childhood we had a "cabin" north of St. Louis that was about two blocks from the Illinois River. It was about 30 miles north of where the Illinois River dumped into the Mississippi River. The Illinois is a river large enough for major barge traffic. The cabin had been in our family for over 30 years and my uncle had the cabin right across the road. It was a nice place for kids, but quite rustic.

When I was a senior in high school there was "a hundred year" flood and water was three feet inside the cabin. I remember going up there with my dad to see what we could salvage. Not much. I do remember seeing snakes swimming around us while we waded in. We carried out a few things like old dishes but 99% of what we had was lost when the water went over roof the next day. We had a free standing garage with a outboard motor and lots of fishing equipment in it that completely disappeared. When the water went down there was no sign of the garage or anything that was in it. When things dried out, we poured gasoline on the remains and burned it to the ground. All that remained was the foundation.

Floods are terrible and the clean-up is hard work with nothing to show for it. Some folks in South Louisiana are really suffering. Many more will be found dead than have been reported so far.

A major hurricane may hit Louisiana the middle of next week. See the 8/24 update at http://www.weatherbell.com/
