Renewable Energy

Post by dan_s »

I have gotten several newsletters (I get a lot of them) telling me that renewable energy (wind, solar and biofuels) are going to benefit from the disaster in Japan and the violence in North African / Middle East.

Do not listen to this noise!

Wind, Solar and biofuels don't make sense in a world of $4/mcf for natural gas. Especially, Wind and Solar which compete directly with NG for power generation.

Biofuels have never made sense to me. Just because something works in the lab does not mean we need to do it in real life. Last year, 39% of the U.S. corn crop went to biofuels, driving food costs through the roof and creating a worldwide food shortage. The cost of beef is directly related to the price of corn. This is insane in a world running out of food and farmland. Subsidies for biofuels is a blatant attempt to buy votes. Most biofuels take more energy to make than they provide.

Keep your money in oil and gas. The fundamentals are real and they are getting better. Most renewables are "Fools Gold".
