Hurricane Update: Irma heading to Florida

Post by dan_s »

The eye of Irma, a monster storm packing winds of 185 miles (295 km) per hour, is expected to cross the northern Leeward Islands, east of Puerto Rico, on Tuesday night or early Wednesday, and is on track to reach Florida by Saturday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami reported.

The threat posed to the U.S. mainland by Irma, described by forecasters as a "potentially catastrophic" storm, loomed as Texas and Louisiana continued to reel from widespread destructive flooding from Hurricane Harvey.

Go to https://www.weatherbell.com/premium/ and watch the daily update. Looks like Irma is heading directly for Miami and then will decide which side of Florida it decides to go on.

If Irma goes west of Florida it may have some impact on oil & gas production in the Gulf of Mexico, but nothing compared to Harvey.

Also in the update you will see that the tropical depression down by Mexico is no longer any threat to Texas, Thank God!

Very cool in Houston this morning, which is weird for this time of year.

Some Leeward Islands hit hard: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/06/worl ... ml?mcubz=3

The flooding in the pictures and videos above is from storm surge, not rain.

Minimal damage reported on Antigua: https://antiguanewsroom.com/news/antigu ... cane-irma/

St. Kitts looks like it only had some high winds that lasted a few hours.

Antigua and St. Kitts are two of the places on the next EPG Cruise that I most want to see.

Susan got a note from RCL that all their ships will stay very far from Irma and not return to Miami or Fort Lauderdale until the storm has passed. This is why you NEVER book a Caribbean cruise in August, September or October. Their is a reason the rates are much lower during these months.
