Hurricane Gordon: The View From Biloxi, MS

Post by dan_s »

The Cruise Director and I are in Biloxi. At 3PM they closed the casinos, so we are now waiting for the eye of the hurricane to pass directly over our hotel.

It is now 3:40 PM and still sunny on the beach with only light winds.

The still have plenty of wine, so we should survive. They do expect 4 to 6 feet of storm surge, which will bring water onto the street in front of our hotel.

Dan, stay safe! I hope you're not on one of those floating casino/ hotels they have there...

We are at the Beau Rivage, an MGM casino hotel. Safe and sound on the 12th floor. At 8:30 PM still only light rain and wind 25-30 mph.

It looks like the eye will come onshore east of Biloxi, which should minimize the height of the surge. We are right on the coast but there is a breakwater about 100 yards out to protect the hotel area.

I stayed up until midnight waiting for Gordon to arrive. I had a good view from the 12th floor. But Gordon never arrived in Biloxi or Gulfport (10 miles west). The eye of Hurricane Gordon made landfall east of Biloxi, so the wind in Biloxi was out of the northeast. There was zero storm surge in Biloxi and no visible damage. We drove to the Gulfport airport at 7:30 AM and arrived back in Sugar Land by noon.

Hurricanes are unpredictable and the Mississippi Gulf Coast was spared this time. The Casinos reopened and 9AM today, so all is well.
