New England risks winter blackouts as gas supplies tighten. Fox Business.
New England power producers are preparing for potential strain on the grid this winter as a surge in natural-gas demand abroad threatens to reduce supplies they need to generate electricity. New England, which relies on natural-gas imports to bridge winter supply gaps, is now competing with European countries for shipments of liquefied natural gas, following Russia’s halt of most pipeline gas to the continent. Severe cold spells in the Northeast could reduce the amount of gas available to generate electricity as more of it is burned to heat homes. The region’s power-grid operator, ISO New England Inc., has warned that an extremely cold winter could strain the reliability of the grid and potentially result in the need for rolling blackouts to keep electricity supply and demand in balance.

MY TAKE: This should not be happening in America! There are massive natural gas and NGL reserves (Marcellus and Utica Shales) under New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia that can be shipped cheaply and safely to New England via pipeline, but the Wachos will not allow drilling in New York or pipelines to be built from NE PA into New England. Ships carrying expensive LNG arrive each week in Boston Harbor.
This crap will spread across the US if we don't get people with common sense in our government.
BTW this has nothing to do with the environment because many people in New England still heat their homes by burning oil and wood, which are much more polluting than natural gas.

From OilPrice.com

- Electricity prices along the Atlantic coast of the United States are set to increase 50-60% year-on-year as gas supplies become squeezed to meet winter heating and generation needs.

- Whilst New England on-peak power prices have averaged slightly below $80/MWh in September, forward electricity prices for December 2022 have been trending well above $200/MWh recently.

- Still facing pipeline constraints for gas coming from the Marcellus-Utica basin, the operator of New England’s power grid has already warned of potential blackouts in the winter in case of a severe cold spell.

- Despite the havoc wreaked upon Florida by Hurricane Ian, power prices in Florida (FRCC), Georgia or the Carolinas are tangibly lower looking into November-December, with both FRCC and SERC recording notable year-on-year increases in gas-powered electricity generation.

Yet New England voters will keep electing Democrats.
