Hurricane Update - Sept 16

Post by dan_s »

Hurricane Jose is a major hurricane, but it is now expected to stay well off the East Coast until it approaches New England. It will weaken rapidly as it approaches Boston because it will be over much cooler water for a day before making landfall, if it actually does.

The BIG PROBLEN is 96L. It will be a named hurricane by Monday, September 18 and it is going right over some of the islands that were hit hard by Irma. It is also heading toward Florida.

If it stays on the southern most track (taking into the Gulf of Mexico) it will stay over Cuba which will weaken it before it enters the GOM. Hurricane Harvey cooled the GOM waters significantly, reducing the chances of another major storm impacting Texas or Louisiana. However, Mother Nature can do some weird stuff so keep paying attention.

Some good news for energy sector investors: This is going to be a strong "La Nina" winter. The Pacific Ocean along the equator west of South America is now much cooler than normal. When that happens we can have some big winter storms that drop a lot of snow over the Great Lakes Area. These are the states that consume the most natural gas for space heating: Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas. The first five are all expected to have a colder winter than normal.
