Chevron lays off 10-15 percent of staff. Chevron (NYSE: CVX) said it would cut 10 to 15 percent of its global workforce, or between 4,500 and 6,750 jobs.
I moved to the Houston area in 1994 when Hess Corp. shut down their Tulsa office and moved to downtown Houston. Part of the move was my promotion to E&P Division Controller. 80% of the Accounting and Land Records staff either were not invited or turned down the move. For about a year, the monthly closing process as "crazy" and we made a lot of "WAGs" to get the books closed. A few years later Hess decided to reduce their North American asset base and after selling off ten asset packages we had a Reduction in Force ("RIF"). I had to fire over 100 people on one day. It was a depressing day and those of us "Left Behind" were not the lucky ones because our workload doubled.
During my 18+ years at Hess we had 6 RIFs. I got "RIF'd" at age 48 in the last one and I look back on that as one of the luckiest days of my life. I had a few more "gigs" and started EPG full time in 2006.
