Working gas in storage was 1,845 Bcf as of Friday, April 9, 2021, according to EIA estimates. This represents a net increase of 61 Bcf from the previous week. Stocks were 242 Bcf less than last year at this time and 11 Bcf above the five-year average of 1,834 Bcf.
At 1,845 Bcf, total working gas is within the five-year historical range.
Mild weather has pushed storage slightly over the 5-year average. The 5-year average builds for the last two weeks of April are 64 BCF and 78 BCF. With colder weather in the upper half of the U.S. we should see storage go back below the 5-year average by the end of April. Then it depends on LNG exports remaining high and summer AC demand. Also, keep in mind that in "Post-Pandemic World" demand for U.S. natural gas will be much higher than it was five years ago.
