Working gas in storage was 2,678 Bcf as of Friday, July 16, 2021, according to EIA estimates. This represents a net increase of 49 Bcf from the previous week. Stocks were 532 Bcf less than last year at this time and 176 Bcf below the five-year average of 2,854 Bcf.
At 2,678 Bcf, total working gas is within the five-year historical range.
Over the last 13 weeks (a qtr of a year) gas in U.S. storage has gone from 11 Bcf above the 5-yr average to 176 Bcf below the 5-yr average, primarily due to much higher LNG exports this year.
There are 16 weeks left in the refill season and each week that passes makes it less likely that storage will get back to the 5-yr average of 3,735 Bcf.
The next two week are usually the two smallest builds of the summer.
