The natural gas prompt month gained back some of the losses of
late last week on its penultimate day of trading. The June 2024
NYMEX contract rose seven cents to settle at $2.59/MMBtu
yesterday, the 12-month strip moved up four cents to $3.17, 2025
picked up 1.5 cents to $3.53, and 2026 through 2028 all moved
up to a penny in either direction. Temperature expectations for the
Midwest & East Coast rose for the first week in June, but most of
the warmth after that seems to be focused on the western half of
the country. Despite not having significantly warmer weather at
the moment, power burns remain elevated by more than six
percent over 2023, likely supported by attractive lower natural gas
prices. As we move into the typically higher demand period of
summer, this increased pull on demand could continue to whittle
the storage surplus that has been enjoyed for the entirety of this
year so far.
