U.S. tariffs on Mexico to be paused for a month, Trump says

WASHINGTON/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will pause new tariffs on Mexico for one month after Mexico agreed to reinforce its northern border with 10,000 National Guard members to stem the flow of illegal drugs, particularly fentanyl, he said on Monday on social media.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the agreement also includes a U.S. commitment to act to prevent trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico. The two leaders spoke by phone on Monday, just hours before U.S. tariffs on Mexico, China and Canada were set to take effect.

MY TAKE: Trump won a landslide election because he promised to secure the border and significantly reduce fentanyl related deaths in the U.S. Fentanyl deaths in Houston happen every day. Canadian Leadership (whoever that is) just needs to work with Team Trump to secure our northern border and he will stop the tariff nonsense. Sounds like a cheaper solution to me than a silly Tariff War.

Also high on Trump's To Do List is ending the war in Ukraine and Lasting Peace in the Middle East.
Trump has a lot of "Fixen" to do thanks to Team Biden.

There is HOPE for Canada: Trump said on Monday he had spoken with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and would do so again at 3 p.m. ET (2000 GMT). Both Canada and Mexico had announced retaliatory tariffs of their own. The tariffs on Canada and China remain poised to take effect on Tuesday.

I thought that Trudeau resigned.

Just in from Trudeau:

I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.

In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.

Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.

Let's give Justin some credit for doing what should have been done for years.

Trump was just using tariffs to get what Canada and Mexico should have been doing for year. Both countries need to remember that they are being protected by the U.S. military, which American taxpayers pay for. The least they can do is help us secure the border.
