Five months into 2015, the S&P 500, grinding its way through the seventh year of a bull market, is barely 3% higher than where it ended 2014. But a handful of energy stocks have managed to outperform the benchmark on the back of rebounding oil prices.
The most notable gainer in the energy universe is Newfield Exploration Co. NFX, +0.24% , which has rallied 37% this year, making it the eighth best performer in the S&P 500. The stock has bounced back after hitting a 52-week low of $22.31 on Jan. 14.

I believe Cimarex Energy (XEC) is taking a hard look at a merger with NFX. The combination of these two Sweet 16 would make one heck of a company.
